Show Your Support for the AIS Arena

Tell Scott Morrison not to permanently close the Australian Institute of Sport Arena.

To the Honourable President and members of the Senate in Parliament assembled:

The petition of the undersigned shows:

AIS Arena, Canberra’s largest indoor sport, concert and exhibition venue, is at risk of permanent closure under the Morrison Government.

The AIS Arena is an integral part of our national capital’s sporting and cultural life.

It is a particularly important asset for access to, and the promotion of, professional women’s sport in the ACT.

The decision to close the AIS Arena without consulting key partners has already caused significant disruption to scheduled artistic and sporting events.

As a result, major cultural events planned for the latter half of this year have been deferred or cancelled, and the Women's National Basketball League champions, the Canberra Capitals, have been deprived of their primary home venue.

This decision and any prolonged uncertainty risk the viability of women’s sport, local jobs, and the artistic life of our city.

From cutting more than 9,000 public service jobs in Canberra since coming to office, to neglecting federal infrastructure spending in the ACT, to recently announcing further cuts to our national cultural institutions – the Liberals simply have no respect for Canberra.

Your petitioners ask that the Senate:

Calls on the Morrison Government to provide the Canberra community with certainty on the future of the AIS Arena.
