Surprise surprise, Peter Dutton and the Coalition are once again turning to page one of their campaign playbook: Canberra-bashing.
But this time, they're taking it to a whole new level and the consequences for our city are much more serious.
It’s become clear that the 36,000 job cuts they have promised in Canberra are just the beginning.
Today I’ve delivered a major speech to push back on this destructive approach and to stand up for our city.
I know you probably don’t have time to watch the whole speech, so here’s the quick summary.
Peter Dutton wants to cancel work from home and the right to disconnect. I know this will be bad for families, bad for women and bad for the public service as a modern employer which won’t be able to attract the best talent from across the nation.
And when confronted about how his approach would harm women's workforce participation, his response?
“There are plenty of opportunities around job sharing.”
Besides completely missing the point, with these eight dismissive words he revealed his 1950s vision for working women: reduce your hours, scale back your ambitions, and take a pay cut.
We know in Canberra what Coalition cuts to the public service mean for our city.
A weaker economy, small business shutting their doors and housing prices dropping – not to mention thousands of families and individuals losing their income.
That’s not something I will let happen without a fight.
This election, Canberrans face a clear choice.
A choice between a government that values the public service, invests in it, and understands the essential role it plays in our society and an opposition with a reckless agenda that threatens to gut essential services, sack staff, and force outdated workplace practices on Australian families.
Only the Albanese Government will continue to ensure the APS is properly resourced to deliver quality services all Australians deserve — including right here in Canberra.
I will do everything I can to stand up against this anti-Canberra agenda from Peter Dutton, and I hope I have your support at this election to continue to be a strong voice for our city.
