CANBERRANS ENCOURAGED TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON THE NATIONAL BUSHFIRE EMERGENCY

17 January 2020

Canberrans will have the opportunity to voice their concerns about the issues that have surrounded this summer’s bushfire crisis.

Senator for the ACT, Katy Gallagher has launched an online portal for Canberrans to register their views about the ongoing bushfire crisis, smoke and air pollution and the broader issue of climate change.

“So many Canberrans have reached out to over the past month expressing concern and anxiety over the current crisis but also frustration with what many see as a lack of action to address the increasing impact of climate change on our country,” Senator Gallagher said.

“It’s very clear to me that Canberrans have strong views on these matters and they want their politicians to hear their concerns loud clear and act on them.”

“When the Parliament returns in February and I have the opportunity to make a speech in the Senate about this summer and I want the views of Canberrans to inform what I say.

“This online portal will give people a really easy way to contribute their views so that I can ensure my speech reflects the concerns of Canberrans who contribute and also reflects the actions they want to see taken.

“We all know that this summer has been different. The scale of the devastating fires all around us, the smoke and air pollution and the heatwaves have given us all a taste of a world we don’t want to live in.

“I encourage anyone who wants to have say – including children and young people – to jump online and send me their views so that I can do my job in the Senate by making a contribution which reflects my community’s feedback.”
