AUSTRALIAN WOMEN TO BE REPRESENTED AT THE G20 CONFERENCE ON WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher will attend the G20 Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment in Bali, Indonesia from 24–26 August 2022.

The themes of this year’s conference — the care economy post-COVID-19, closing the digital gender gap, and women’s entrepreneurship — are closely aligned with the Government’s commitment to making women’s equal opportunity a social and economic priority.

Minister Gallagher will use the trip to engage with Ministerial counterparts to explore how G20 partners can achieve lasting changes that will improve the lives of women around the globe.

Minister Gallagher will meet with ministerial counterparts from Indonesia, Fiji, the United Kingdom, India and the European Union during the two day visit.

“The conference presents a unique opportunity to discuss the many issues facing women around the world and to directly provide recommendations to G20 leaders who will meet in Bali later this year.

“There are many common challenges that other countries also face when it comes to women’s policy and where we can work together to develop effective solutions.”

The visit follows the Prime Minister’s and Foreign Minister’s visits to Indonesia and continues Australia’s strong support for Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.

During the conference, Minister Gallagher will deliver a statement on the care economy post-COVID-19, focusing on the care economy as an area of opportunity – particularly with regard to women’s economic participation and empowerment.

“Our Government recognises the care economy as a significant and growing  part of our workforce and as critical economic and social infrastructure,” Minister Gallagher said.

“We know women make up the majority of workers in the paid care economy in Australia and women also disproportionately bear the weight of  unpaid care and domestic work in our homes and communities.

“Our deep reliance on women dominated workforces in health, aged care and child care during the pandemic revealed the critical contribution of this sector and people working in it.

“I look forward to sharing the Albanese Labor Government’s plans for women at the conference and listening to the lessons and ideas of other ministers attending the conference.”
