Labor thanks Glenys Beauchamp PSM for her long service to the APS and welcomes the nomination of Professor Brendan Murphy as Secretary of the Department of Health.
 
Ms Beauchamp has announced today that she will retire from the APS in late February, and the Prime Minister has recommended to the Governor-General that she be succeeded by Professor Murphy.
 
Australia depends on a strong public service, and Ms Beauchamp has served successive governments with distinction. Prior to her appointment as Health Secretary in September 2017, she was Secretary of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science from 2013 to 2017, and Secretary of the then-Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport from 2010 to 2013.
 
Labor thanks Ms Beauchamp for her close work with the former Labor Government, during which time she was awarded a Public Service Medal for coordinating Commonwealth support during the 2009 Victorian bushfires. Labor also appreciates Ms Beauchamp’s constructive engagement with the Parliament since 2013.
 
She will be succeeded as Secretary of the Department of Health by Professor Brendan Murphy, who is currently the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer.
 
Professor Murphy was previously the Chief Executive Officer of Austin Health in Victoria, following an extensive career in medicine.
 
Labor is grateful for Professor Murphy’s advice to the Parliament as CMO, and looks forward to working with him in his new role.
