SENATOR KATY GALLAGHER
SHADOW MINISTER FOR FINANCE
SHADOW MINISTER FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE
SENATOR FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
The Morrison Government cut thousands more public service jobs in just one year, according to the latest snapshot by the Australian Public Service Commission.
The 2019 State of the Service report shows 3,158 jobs were slashed across the Australian Public Service (APS) during the 2018-19 financial year.
The worst job losses include 1,883 positions in Canberra, 903 in New South Wales and 209 in Western Australia.
Some regional areas were hit particularly hard in 2018-19, with 91 job losses in Townsville and more than 100 in the Illawarra region.
There was also a massive shift towards insecure, temporary work–the number of permanent positions plummeted by 3,966 while non-ongoing positions increased by 808.
These job losses hurt our economy and weaken the capability of the public service.
Public servants perform a critical role in our democracy by developing policies and delivering services to help keep Australians safe, regulate corporate conduct and support vulnerable members of our community.
Public servants and the communities they work for deserve more from Scott Morrison than these massive job cuts.
