MEDIA RELEASE

PROVIDER IDENTIFIED FOR WODEN MEDICARE URGENT CARE CLINIC

The Albanese Government is pleased to announce a provider has been selected to operate the new Woden Medicare Urgent Care Clinic (UCC) following a competitive tender process led by the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Primary Health Network.

The Phillip Medical and Dental Centre has been identified as the successful provider to operate the Woden Medicare Urgent Care Clinic, which will be located at 33 Colbee Court, Phillip.

The clinic will be open seven days a week operating extended hours.

The new Medicare Urgent Care Clinic will begin delivering care for the community over the coming weeks.

The clinic will help to ease pressure on the Canberra Hospital emergency department (ED), where around 44 per cent of presentations in 2023-24 were for semi-urgent or non-urgent conditions.

The Woden Medicare Urgent Care Clinic will be led by General Practitioners and complement the existing network of five Medicare Urgent Care Clinics across Canberra, including Gungahlin, Belconnen, Dickson, Weston Creek and Tuggeranong.

Over 95 Medicare Urgent Care Clinics have opened across Australia, which have already seen more than 2.2 million presentations since the first sites opened in June 2023. This includes over 279,000 presentations to the existing ACT Medicare Urgent Care Clinics.

Quotes attributable to Senator for the ACT, Katy Gallagher:

“Canberrans deserve timely, affordable care close to home. The new Woden Medicare Urgent Care Clinic will give families a place to walk in, be seen quickly, and be fully bulk billed with just a Medicare card.

“This clinic will take real pressure off the Canberra Hospital emergency department by treating urgent but non-life-threatening issues seven days a week.

“Our Government is strengthening Medicare, so people get care when they need it, without the hit to the household budget.”

Quotes attributable to Minister Butler:

“The Albanese Government is getting on with the job of delivering more Medicare Urgent Care Clinics for Canberrans”

“The new clinic in Woden will be open seven days a week, extended hours and most importantly they’ll be fully bulk billed.”

“This GP led clinic is intended to take pressure off the local hospitals, including the Canberra Hospital, and will fill an important gap in services across extended hours and over the weekend.”

Quotes attributable to David Smith MP, Member for Bean:

“Southside families have been asking for faster, easier access to urgent care and this clinic delivers exactly that for Woden and the Tuggeranong Valley.

“Located near Canberra Hospital, the GP lead clinic will help keep the ED for emergencies while giving locals a convenient, fully bulk billed option for after-hours and same-day needs.

“When the doors open in January, people will be able to walk in, get quality care, and head home without an ED wait or an out-of-pocket bill.”
