THE FINANCE MINISTER SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON HIS OWN JOB

28 August 2019

SENATOR KATY GALLAGHER
SHADOW MINISTER FOR FINANCE
SHADOW MINISTER FOR THE PUBLIC SERVICE
SENATOR FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Last night’s speech by Finance Minister, Mathias Cormann at The Sydney Institute sums up everything that is wrong with the Morrison Government.

Mr Cormann is the latest senior minister in Scott Morrison’s Government to focus on political attacks rather than doing the job they were elected to do – deliver for Australians.

When given the opportunity to outline his priorities as a senior member of the Morrison Government’s economic team Mr Cormann hit a new low.

He ignored the real challenges facing Australia’s economy and instead concentrated on gratuitous election analysis about the Australian Labor Party.

With Australia experiencing the slowest economic growth since the Global Financial Crisis, stagnating wages, a staggering 1.8 million Australians unemployed or underemployed, and consumer confidence and business investment low, is this really the best the Finance Minister can offer the Australian people?

When Australians need and expect a plan from the Morrison Government to get the economy going again all they get is a Minister obsessed with his political opponents.

It’s beyond time for Minister Cormann to concentrate on the job he’s paid to do and come up with a plan to turn the economy around and work in the national interest.
